The ultimate goal with my work is to create joyous, unique, affordable art that becomes part of one’s home. As always, the subject matter of my work continues to reflect the influence of the coastal environment. However, I’m also exploring other nature motifs including foliage imagery and patterns in nature. I express these themes and subject matters in the form of mixed-media paintings. The vast majority of my materials are repurposed, including fabric, buttons, beads and other found objects. I love working with repurposed material because it gives the item a second life, and adds a unique quality to my painting that can never be replicated. Each piece is truly one of a kind. My current work involves multiple layers of acrylic paint and fabric. This layering of material creates an obvious tactile quality, which records my personal interaction with the piece. The depth created by the layered materials starts to blur the line with low-relief sculptures.
The largest influences on my process and style continue to be from the craft arts, including stained-glass, mosaics, miniatures, quilting and embroidery. Since working as a professional artist, my technique and style has evolved and become more involved and detailed. The creative process, the manipulation of the material I use, and the physical involvement with creating a piece has become more significant to me as an artist than the actual finished product. More so than ever, the experience and process of making my art is as important as the finished work.
