Sarah Hinceman – Love & Light Pottery

I create a variety of decorative and functional forms with stoneware and porcelaneous clays, selected to complement the final texture and glaze selection for each form. I use both hand-building and the pottery wheel to create jewelry, bowls, mugs, vases, platters and I especially love making lidded jars and vessels. In addition to traditionally glazed forms, I also use a variety of surface design techniques such as, carving designs into the clay, slip trailing the surface and Sgraffito, a decorative Italian design technique which means “to scratch”. I free carve each piece, intentionally leaving behind the organic nuances of the creation process, resulting in an authentic, asymmetrical, and unique creation. All pieces are fired in my electric kiln “Scarlett” which resides at The Artworks art village located in the South Front district of Wilmington NC.
Love and Light is a subjective concept and can hold different meanings for people. For me, Love & Light is an emerging force from deep within the heart and spirit. The inspiration for my pottery flows from this transmission of energy and connectedness with others. Making and sharing art is the way I hope to open hearts and connect with the world around me. I believe we are all impressionable beings and we remember how an experience, object, or person makes us feel. This feeling is the energy, the love and light of life. The art I create is a pathway, a vibration, from my heart to yours.
