Soul and Sea artist Joanna Frye was born and raised in Kernersville, North Carolina. She earned a B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from East Carolina University 2002.
Over the next several years Joanna made her way west, eventually landing in California. There she taught art and continued painting, while beginning work in mixed media. She also started surfing, and her newly impassioned love for the sea began to permeate every facet of her life. The progression of her work clearly displayed this shift, and the ocean continues to be a source of deep inspiration for her today.
Whether figure work or more literal paintings of the sea, all of Joanna’s pieces originate with the idea that the beauty is most grandly displayed in the natural world – that beauty lifts up, heals, refreshes. Now living in Wilmington, she continues to show and sell pieces locally as well as across the nation.
